Spring Break part 5

The Cinque Terra include five coastal villages in the the Liguria region of Italy. These little towns literally hang on the cliffs with terraced hillsides leading down to the Mediterranean Sea. Most of these towns can only be reached by boat, train or hiking paths. The Cinque Terre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The 5 villages are called Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore.

Riomaggiore
Our first day exploring this area we took a boat from La Spezia to Riomaggiore. The perspective from the boat helps you see how remote these villages really are. Much of the landscape is of man-made terraces which are incredible...imagine how many hours or years of work it would have been to create. This would be the only workable land which was mainly used for growing grapes.

We really enjoyed the various places we found to munch on our lunches and this is another...we're overlooking the Via del Amore which is an easy walking path connecting the two villages of Riomaggiore and Manarola.
On the "road of love"... Monterosa...

The crucifiction displayed on the mountain.
